artJOURNALING daily: painting date night

artJOURNALING daily...make time for art journal date night!

spend the night creating art with your loved ones..put our your FAVE art supplies and a few journals and PLAY! Tyler and I spent the other night doodling and drawing. it's a great way to spend quality time doing something creative. I always love to see what he creates...he works with freedom and experiments with the materials. We worked in Strathmore Visual Journals {my favorite is the Mixed Media paper} and Strathmore Windpower Watercolor Pads, painted with Windsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors and scribbled with Sakura Cray-Pas Specialist Oil Pastels. Photos were taken with my iPhone Hipstamatic camera settings: lens-Buckhorst HI, film-Blanko Noir, flash-off.

a few more art journaling date night ideas..

• create a prompt jar and use them to encourage ideas for your art journal pages.
• plan an art journaling and wine party with your friends. have them bring their favorite art supplies and enjoy wine, cheese and cupcakes!
• put out a large canvas or butcher paper and create a BIG painting to frame for your home
• make your own "art journaling" wrapping paper, recycle brown grocery bags, paint & doodle, then use them to wrap gifts
• grab your journals & art supplies then head to your FAVE coffee/tea shop or spend the day at the park and have an art journaling picnic.
• take photos and print them out, create a scrapbook page or collage them in your art journal.
• print the photos on iron-on transfer paper and make t-shirts.
• most of all enjoy spending quality time with your friends and family!

document your summer in photos. spend a few minutes each day capturing memories, images, textures, light through your camera lens.

LOVE. enjoying the gorgeous weather and spending time with my lovely friends. creative photo ideas & jumpstarts...

• reflection {self portrait} take a photo of your reflection in the window
• {repetition} take a photo of repeating object
• {inspiration} take photos of things that inspire you
• take photos of your food
• look for patterns in your photos and doodle them in your journal
• photograph leaf/plant shapes with the sun behind it
• take snapshots of flowers and paint them in your sketchbook
• {motion} capture images while you are a passenger in the car 
• take a picture daily and create a monthly calendar of photos
• enlarge the photo and print it, collage it into your journal 
• write a poem about one of your photos
• brainstorm words that relate to your photos & write them in your journal

artJOURNALING daily: stitched journal covers

artJOURNALING daily...wildly stitched art journal covers

If you have seen my handmade art journal collections, you know that most of my journals have wildly embellished free motion stitched covers. Nothing is off limits, I stitch together everything...paper, newsprint, transparencies, painted fabric, photocopies of my orignal artwork and leftover collage paintings. I enjoy doodling with the sewing machine, it's similar to using a pen, but my mark-making tool is my Janome machine with a darning foot. {click on the photos for more details}

some handy sewing tips and ideas...

• explore designing your OWN art journal...it's so much more person than store bought journals.
• work serendipidously...I don't pre-plan my stitched collage, I grab pieces and attach them as I sew
• doodle around interesting shapes and painted colors of the fabric.
• use CONTRAST colors..experiment with using two different thread colors for stitching. I like to use a bright rayon for the top and a different color cotton in the bobbin
• I use silence cloth, warm & natural, colored felt or Pellon Legacy bamboo batting to create my art quilt sandwiches
• art quilt sandwich= painted fabric top piece + batting + colorful painted or vintage fabric bottom
• make two art quilt sandwhiches then find interesting and fun ways to join them together to create a unique journal cover
• explore "couching" stitching fibers and threads onto the surface
• TIP: make sure your paint/markers are DRY before you stitch
• don't forget...you can stitch art journal pages too!
• experiment with Heat-n-Bond Lite if you want to hold your collage pieces in place. This is helpful if you have smaller squares or rectangles when making a patchwork collage.

snippets from the studio...

it has been a hectic couple of months...I've been busy with wrapping up the art and photography for my new book, going through my author review, designing new digital art journaling kits, planning for FALL online workshops and writing/designing NEW e-books. Along with all the book deadlines, I've written a few articles that will launch in the Fall issues of Artful Blogging, Where Women Create and Misc. Magazine. Planning for upcoming LIVE workshops at The Creative Connection, Artfest Annex, Art-Is YOU East/West and Art Unraveled...join me! I've squeezed in a little time for painting and playing in my art journal..gearing up to get back on track with artJOURNALING daily.

 now that I have a little summer break from teaching and writing, my plan is to design a new collection of art journals, collage kits and digital products that will launch in JULY in my online boutique.
