Spring
is in the air..the temperature is slowly warming here in sunny
California and the sakura {cherry blossoms} are peeking out of the
trees. I pulled together a couple of flair trays from paper & fabric
bits and embellishments in my studio and used them to inspire the
colors of my recent paintings. Enjoy the
snippets of Spring color inspiration...
Here's
a peek into a mixed media painting in progress and an art journal

My #onelittleword for 2013 is NEW,
so every month my intention is to visit a NEW place and to experience
NEW things.
WE LOVE to explore...you might remember that I've shared previous adventures here and here. We make it a point to take weekend getaways and day trips whenever we can. On Sunday, Tyler and I took a drive to the coast to visit Fort
Funston, south of San
Francisco, and spent the afternoon exploring the beach with Indie. It's
was a beautiful day, this was our first visit and it's one of the best
places to take your puppy for off-leash play. It's an easy hike through
the trees and down to the beach. It was a bit chilly but the sun shined
brightly...a gorgeous day! Indie loved roaming about the sand and
chasing the other pups by the water.
here are snapshots of inspiration I discovered...
amazing textures and patterns in the sand & rocks...
a chilly day. sun shining.
puppies PLAY. enjoying the fresh air. birds soar above.
sand glistens
waves crash. taking in the glorious day. caught in the breeze.
indulge in the NEW. ideas. textures. experiences.

BREATHE deeply.
and APPRECIATE the MOMENT.
----->>> I discovered the mantra above in the lululemon manifesto.
It is a great reminder to stop, take it all in and appreciate whatever is going on in your life this moment. You can see more of my travel & exploring adventures here.

a fun little vine video of our day at the beach...
Today I'm sharing the beautiful artwork and fun art journaling video by my sweet friend Mindy Lacefield, {you may know her from her website www.timssally.com} and last year she helped kick off my Doodles Unleashed book tour. Her art journals and mixed media artwork are full of colorful layers and whispering heartfelt words. She's a beautiful, creative soul. There is so much magic in watching the way she paints..her creative spirit jumps off the page.
I asked Mindy to share with us her 5 FAVE art supplies...here's her list:
A couple weekends ago I had a wonderful visit with her, Carissa Paige and Pixie Campbell for dinner in Berkeley. {sorry for the dark, blurry photo..but that's the only one I have..lol}
She has a wonderful NEW year-long e-course called True Free Spirit...which I will be diving into! The first image in this post is the March project. find out more details about her workshop here.
I believe there is a lot we can soak in from watching and learning about another artist's process, not to copy but for inspiration. In the coming months I will feature various artists during artJOURNALING fridays. I hope you find some time and make marks in your journal this weekend. I know I'm super inspired to PLAY after watching Mindy's video. happy art journaling!!

Today I'm sharing the LOVE with another art journaling tutorial. This video continues my HEARTS art journaling backgrounds tutorial series. There are a number of stamping, stenciling and painting techniques on paper and fabric. I showcase my graffiti GLAM art stamps and ILoveTo Create paints building colorful layers on muslin and Strathmore mixed media paper. All the techniques I share in the videos are great jumpstarts to make your own papers for collage, art journals, scrapbook projects or Project Life creations. Enjoy!
This
past weekend I taught my first COLOR + JOURNAL LOVE
mixed media retreat at my studio! We had a wonderful, creative three days full of
painting, mark-making and book binding to build handmade journals. My
students came from all over the west coast, they spent some time exploring
downtown Danville and enjoying yummy food too.
We kicked off the workshop with color palette explorations and I taught a session on color mixing. Then we dove into making handmade stamps/stencils and spent a day printmaking with plexiglas, creating pages with colorful, juicy layers of textures and marks. Everyone made FABULOUS one-of-a-kind art journals embellished with fibers, macrame and beads. Little Indie girl came by for a visit on the final day. :) Here's a peek inside our AMAZING weekend!
happy art journaling FRIDAY!! I've been teaching all day at my studio..this weekend is my COLOR + journal LOVE retreat..lots
of painting fun going on! We're spending the weekend creating handmade
journals. Today, I have a throwback technique and creative jumpstart based on art journals I created back in 2010. The photo above is the cover of the journal.
art journal IDEA: create a stitched collage cover-----> rummage through your hand painted stash
and photos/images, grab 4-5 pieces then layer them onto a painted page.
attach them by machine stitching. mix found papers and black &
white copies of your artwork or images. create a number of stitched
pages then bind the into a handmade journal. this is a great way to use
up all those pieces in your stash. to see more of this art journal
collection visit here
happy creating & stitching...have a FAB weekend! xoxo~treic

My monthly style reMIX blog series continues with a HEARTS mixed media art journaling project. Last week I gave you a sneak peek into this Valentine inspired project. I'm sharing this idea in a series of video tutorials throughout the month. It features a medley of mixed media printmaking techniques on paper and fabric using my fave ILoveToCreate products {lots of red, pinks and purple paints}. The papers and fabrics you paint can be used for a variety of projects and crafts. Use the painting jumpstarts to create your handmade valentines.
happy February lovelies!! You'll see alot of red, pink and HEARTS on my blog this month. To get you in the Valentine spirit I'm sharing a mini how-to video + digital image. The artwork in the image above was created by painting with my Graffiti Glam stamps and handmade HEART stencils using Tulip fabric paints and sprays on muslin. I took a photo of the painted fabric using the Hipstamatic app then imported it into Photoshop CS6 and layered with type. I wrote the word "heart" with my Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet.
How has your art journaling practice been going? As for me, I've found that I am journaling more on my iPad. But I did spend the past few days in the studio painting and creating some fun projects that I'll be sharing this month.
I've been having fun creating these little #vine video snippets...it really challenges me to figure out creative ways to share a story in 6 secs. {find me on vine at Traci Bautista}
Here's a short art journaling #howto...XOXO stencil prints!
let's kick off February artJOURNALING fridays with a few art journaling prompts & ideas...
