Since today I normally do a post for artJOURNALING fridays, I wanted to share a few of my latest collection of handmade art journals and give you ideas for constructing your own journals. The art of making handmade books is sometimes more fun than fill in in the book. None of the journals I make are the same. They all have a unique look and different papers & embellishments. In my new shoppe, from time to time, I'll have some of my original art and handmade art journals for sale. Here's a peek at my latest collection...

"A" handmade art journal - {photo above} This free motion, freestyle machine stitched art journal is filled with a collection of decorated journal prompt pages, b/w & color laser copies, recycled papers and card stock. Some pages have handwritten creative prompts. A few pages inside have stitched embellished designs. Each journal is one-of-a-kind with layers hand painted fabrics, dyed fabric & papers and some have hand lettered words. This journal spine is machine stitched. • add your favorite washi tape as decoration to the cover of your journals
• attach  stencils to the cover, create a cover from heavy duty manila folders
• machine stitch flower shapes 
• glue photos to the outside cover of your journal
• paint stencils on brown grocery bags and cut them down to create journal pages

• paint fabric swatches then collage them together using a sewing machine
• add glitter to the fabric cover
• print dimensional paint onto the surface of fabric using transparencies
• tape smaller pieces of papers together to extend the length of pages
• anything goes...when making a journal bind papers that have paint or doodle marks on them into the book. the pages don't have to be blank. I actually prefer to have some type of mark on the page as a jumpstart

It has patchwork art quilted canvas hand painted & stitched covers, hand painted paper, vintage ribbon/fabric remnants and painted cardboard. • print your artwork on heavy weight card stock and stitch it together to create journal covers
• add painted strips of fabric or fabric tape to the spine to make it more sturdy
• add large mailing envelopes as pages, use the end with the flap and closure to carry collage pieces for working on-the-go
• stitch large journal rectangle blocks {areas you can later write in} onto the page using a sewing machine.

treiCdesigns DIGITALS: artist papers collage tutorial

My digital printable artist paper and artist paper collage kits can be used for many types of mixed media projects including collage and art journaling backgrounds. In January, I shared my one little word: NEW and the collage panel I created to remind me of what I wanted to experience with my OLW in 2013. Here's a step-by-step tutorial using a mixture of my collage paper kits.

materials needed for this project:

• cardboard and/or chipboard
• scissors
• printable artist paper by treiCdesigns DIGITALS
• artist papers from Graffiti GLAM stamp set #2
• SPARKLEspring printable artist papers
• Collage Pauge Matte
• Tulip Paint Pouncer foam brush
• misc papers like graph paper index cards
• {optional} Janome DC2012 sewing machine

project steps:

1. cut strips from various pieces of printed collage papers
2. brush Collage Pauge onto surface of cardboard then adhere the cut strips over the top, brush on another layer of Collage Pauge to seal the papers.
3. use fingers to smooth out paper to make sure its free of air bubbles.
4. TIP: keep a wet paper towel or wipe handy, to clean hands
5. continue to add strips of paper adhered with Collage Pauge alternating colors and papers
6. write quotes and journal in between the collage pieces with a permanent pen
7. let the collage cardboard panel dry
8. cut out a word or letters from chipboard or fedex envelope. I cut out the word "NEW"
9. free motion stitch over the dried collage board then stitch cut letters onto the collaged cardboard with a sewing machine. Alternatives to sewing include stapling, gluing, hand stitching or using tape.

1. Use this technique to create two cardboard panels for art journal covers
2. collage strips into a journal page
3. collage strips of paper onto heavy duty fabric like unbleached drill cloth
4. print the artist papers on inkjet fabric sheets and glue or stitch them to a manila folder
5. glue strips on 3"x 4" card stock to create journaling cards
6. make party invitations or handmade cards using this technique

Are you having fun yet?  I hope you've been enjoying perusing my new website. Over the next few posts I will be sharing NEW products featured in the shoppe. Once of my favorite items are my collection of printable art journaling cards. These are delivered in both PDF an .PNG formats. The PDFs can be printed in any program that reads PDFs. Once you print them, cut them to size, most measure 3" x 4" and 4"x 6" with a few smaller sizes. Then add them to your journals and day planners, like I did for one of my monthly calendar planners in the photo below.

{photo above} I used the featherPOP art journaling card on the cover of my monthly planner. I wrote words, added rub-on letters, drew doodles, applied washi tape and machine stitched it to a manila folder to make the cover of my planner.

Here are a few ideas for using for the art journaling cards...

• stitch them onto manila folders to create pockets
• use them as recipe cards or to write notes
• glue them into your day planner to add a splash of color
• tape them to the wall as a color inspiration palette
• print the cards onto card stock and use them to make handmade cards
• create colorful inspiration flash card reminders
• hand them with a wooden clothes pin on twine or string
• attach a photo on them
• use as inserts into your Project Life or Photo Freedom photo sleeves
• write your goals, ideas and thoughts on the cards
• use them for your one little word project
• use the PNG files for digital scrapbooking
• print them onto inkjet fabric sheets or self adhesive labels then attached them to your journal

{photo above} feather POP art journaling cards - use them as flash card reminders for BIG projects or goals. write down the project then hang them on your bulletin board or attach to your calendar.

{photo above} seasons DAY journaling cards - printable art journaling borders/tapes. print them and trim to size, glue to edges of your journal pages or day planner. print onto adhesive label paper to create stickers.
