I'm often asked, "what do you do with all those painted papers and prints?"
I make handmade journals..I've created hundreds of journals.
In this special collection, each journal tells a story, they are dimensional moving paintings..stitched collages. The random-sized pages flip and fold out to create a "choose your own adventure" experience.
There is no front or back, they can be turned in any direction.
Some of the journals open up to create art quilt wall hangings.
Many hours of painting, mark-making and stitching went into making these one-of-a-kind handmade books.
My hope is that when my handmade books find new homes, they bring inspiration with every turn of the page and inspire you to "be FREE." . 💕
I haven't made a limited edition collection of journals since 2012, so some of you who are new to my art, might not have seen my previous handmade books. I've been creating them for over 20 years.
The art of making journals for me, is sometimes more fulfilling than working on the inside and filling them up.
MY journal making process is very intuitive and serendipitous. I have stacks of my painted papers and fabrics laid out on my table and I creatively mix random sized pages, grabbing pieces, tearing and cutting them then stitching them wildly together.
There isn't a plan, I don't choose a predetermined size.
As I start to put them together, it just flows..
the process is very freeing and I never quite know what the end product is going to be. I keep stitching until I feel the journal is complete. I hang the pieces on my inspiration wall, then start on another book. I usually have 4-7 structures I'm creating at one time. It's very similar to the way I paint...I work on multiple pieces. I add to one, then to the next and step back to see how it's working. Then continue to add to the next.
Once a journal is finished, I write a few inspiration phrases or words on some of the pages. The beauty of creating journals in this fashion is that there is a creative jumpstart on the page...a mark, a color palette, an image...something to inspire you.
my journals are made to be used and LOVED. I encourage you to add your own words, writings and photos inside. display the book on your coffee table. add YOUR personal touch. have fun and experiment.
