Join me and my artist friends for two (2) full days & nights with nothing to think about but Art Journaling. Optional Friday activities in a wonderfully creative UNESCO designated city. A brand new Retreat Hotel blocks from the Lower Town Arts District and Historic Downtown Paducah, opening reception and lunches included in your registration, goody bags, surprises, and, Oh! did we mention….STENCILS??
Escape to Ephemera Paducah for a weekend of intensive art journaling fun in the quaint river city of Paducah, Ky. Indulge yourself in hours of creative adventures. Cultivate new friendships and nourish your soul in a supportive environment designed to encourage students to experiment with new techniques, tools, and concepts.
An Art Journal Affair features coordinated workshops taught by StencilGirl designers and instructors: Seth Apter, Traci Bautista, Pam Carriker and, StencilGirl herself, Mary Beth Shaw.
We’ll explore a gazillion (well, OK, a TON of) art journaling techniques and, along with honing your skills, you’ll take home a commemorative set of StencilGirl stencils created just for this art retreat.
When the day is done, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Paducah, a designated UNESCO Creative City, which brims with delightful eateries, shops, cultural attractions and places to visit. You’ll also be invited to spend time after hours in the Art Journaling Playroom we’ve set up just for you at your hotel. Ephemera Paducah will be transformed into StencilGirl Central with onsite shopping for all your mixed media dreams!

ARTIST EXPLORATIONS: a love affair with abstract mark-making + color PLAY
Explore developing your personal visual vocabulary through mark making and printmaking using your journal as a creative catalyst. Working on multiple pages at once {5-10 pieces}, you’ll create a collection of “studies” with spontaneous mark-making, colorful layers of paint, markers and mixed media. Explore creative prompts and exercises to unearth your very own symbols and personal marks. These visual stories can be used to inspire working BIG on canvas or they could be used to create a handmade art journal. You’ll create several pages as we work fast and create with freedom.

Art.journal.PLAY: Creative Explorations in Mixed Media, Printmaking and Art Journaling
Experiment with mixed media, painting, printmaking and fabric collage techniques to create a one-of-a-kind art journal. We will start with printing fabric and paper with handmade and found tools. Then build a journal with a “textured” collage cover that is wrapped with embellished fibers and yarns. You will leave feeling inspired to fill your new handmade book with techniques I share about building colorful mixed media layers.
day one – printmaking unleashed – handmade tools + nature tools + patterns
We’ll start the class building and creating numerous handmade printing tools, including handmade stamps, hot glue stencils and paper masks. Then we’ll take a nature walk to take photos and collect dried grasses, leaves and sticks to create handmade paintbrushes. You’ll work with a huge amount of materials and mixed media supplies to experiment with mark-making and patterns.
day two – plexi printmaking + mixed media layers
Experiment with plexiglas monoprints working with handmade stamps and stencils to build layers on fabric and paper. Explore simple printmaking techniques without a press to create acrylic skins and colorful mixed media fabrics and papers.
day three – art journal construction: doodles + collage
Throughout the workshop we’ll explore techniques from my all my books and I’ll showcase how to use them on page for your journal pages. I’ll share demonstrations in mark-making, lettering and talk about how to digitally leverage your artwork. We’ll continue to work on paintings from the previous day and explore mixed media techniques including collage, doodling and begin book construction. During day three we’ll start to create textured “canvas” journal covers from layers of fabrics and papers.
day four – art journal construction: binding + creative jumpstarts
During the final day of the workshop, we’ll continue to build the journals creating the fiber embellished binding. Throughout the day we’ll explore creative prompts and art journaling exercises. I’ll also share tips on photography using the iPhone/iPad, working with various apps to create digital images and ideas on how to incorporate your explorations into your art journal.
