AUTUMN + HOLIDAY : art journaling {mixed media + printmaking} This is a LIVE online event, where I broadcast from my studio, share demos and host a Q & A session. We'll kick off the workshop exploring aspects of COLOR...experiments in mixing color and making prints on art journal pages. I'll talk about my favorite supplies, printmaking, color studies, doodling and collage. {image below shows digital printable collage sheets that you receive when you register for the class}

During the live stream workshop, I'll lead you through exercises where you'll experiment with color mixing to create paint swatches on pages inspired by AUTUMN and Holiday hues. We'll work with multiple layers of paint, stencils, monoprinting and I'll share ideas on using handmade stamps to make beautiful prints and patterns. The art journaling live stream gives you the opportunity to play and create in your journal while I share real-time demos and creative exercises.  If you can't attend the LIVE online session, a replay will be available. PLUS workshop includes printable digital artist papers, collage sheets and journaling cards digital download.

hello creative friends! It's getting cooler here in the bay area and ground is covered with beautiful shades of autumn. On my daily walks I snap photos of the gorgeous, colorful inspiration.

art journal prompt: take a photo of leaves and use the photo for color palette inspiration or doodles leaf shapes in your journal. write about the chill autumn day.

DIY gift wrap + gift tags {free download}

If you're like me, you are busy wrapping gifts last minute. But that doesn't mean they can't be beautiful and one-of-a-kind!  With a few simple supplies, you can create unique DIY holiday gift wrap even if you are short on time.

Creative Toolbox>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Scribbles Dimensional Paint {aka Puffy Paint}

construction paper or recycled brown grocery/shopping paper bags

scissors

Graffiti GLAM stamps and Scribbles Stamp pads

Tulip Fashion Ultra Fine Glitter

twine, hemp string or baker's twine

Collage Pauge or glue

gift tags {download my FREE holiday tags & washi tape}

BASIC technique>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

 

I created a variety of handmade gift wrap by creating Puffy Paint prints. Doodle onto one piece of construction paper then take another piece of paper and press it onto the first painted paper to transfer the print. This will create multiple prints in short amount of time. The paint will take up 10-20 minutes to dry. You can also sprinkle glitter over the wet paint to add sparkle to the design. Once your printed papers are dry, you are ready to wrap!!

STAMPED gift wrap {below}>>>>>> apply Scribbles stamp pad to Graffiti GLAM stamp and print onto construction paper. use a soft rubber brayer to roll over the back of the stamp to get a solid print. While ink is wet, sprinkle Tulip Fashion ultra fine glitter over the stamped patterns. let dry. cut a piece and use it to wrap around gift package. Secure with my FREE washi tape.

STAMPED  & doodle gift wrap {below}>>>>>> apply Scribbles stamp pad to Graffiti GLAM stamp and print onto construction paper. While ink is wet, sprinkle Tulip Fashion ultra fine glitter over the stamped patterns. let dry. write Merry with Scribbles red dimensional paint then sprinkle red Tulip Fashion glitter to wet paint. let dry then add tag

COLLAGE snowflake {below}>>>>>> hand cut a snowflake from painted construction paper. Apply Collage Pauge Matte to the back of paper snowflake, press it onto the top of wrapped package, then apply another layer of Collage Pauge Matte. Tie a piece of baker's twine and add a gift tag.

merry JINGLE color palette

artJOURNALING daily {holiday LOVE} continues with a little holiday color inspiration!

Inspired by traditional holiday colors, my latest color palette combines hues of bright red, turquoise, bright green and white. Here are a few IDEAS and examples of how this combination makes it's way throughout my holiday journal pages. Your art journal pages don't have to be layers and layers of paint. Sometimes the simplicity of a mark or stamp that tells a story other times it's using a found or handmade tool that adds a beautiful touch. Use the pages of your art journal to PLAY and experiment! 

a few creative prompts for you...

• look for found tools around your house or studio
• paint on recycled grocery bags
• create a HOLIDAY color palette - paint it in your journal, cut out paint chips
• use the merry JINGLE color palette to inspire your HOLIDAY decor
• be inspired by my merry bliss flair tray
• paint your backgrounds or collage pages using the colors in this palette or your own palette
• make your own holiday printing plates. read about my HOLIDAY handmade stamp tutorial here

IDEA: spray through stencils, then scribble your journaling over the top.

journal prompt: what do you LOVE about the holidays?

IDEA: create a handmade foam stamp with holiday icons. apply paint or ink to stamp and stamp it onto a recycled grocery bag. I love Whole Foods and Trader Joes paper bags during the holidays, they are decorated with holiday sayings and images.

IDEA: spray paint through a HANDMADE hot glue stencil/stamp. experiment with found tools, cut apart a tomato basket and use it as a stencil. paint on fabric.

Happy December creative lovelies!! It's my FAVE time of the year, the holiday season always brings wonderful memories and excitement for the new year. Since 2009, during December I've shared numerous projects, tutorials and holiday themed posts in my {24} HOLIDAY inspirations blog series. For 2012, I decided to do something different...a little twist on my artJOURNALING daily series...introducing HOLIDAY LOVE!

Throughout the month of December, I'll share a variety of creative prompts and ideas for painting, doodling, sketching, photography, journaling and collage here on my blog. These are meant to be simple exercises you can create in 15-30 min or spend as much time as you want to PLAY. In these workshops we'll explore printmaking with plexiglass, collage and creating HOLIDAY paper projects. Each session we will make handmade stamps & stencils with a holiday theme. 30+ holiday blog ideas

AUTUMN creative business CAMP...holiday planning blog series continues. In the first post I shared how to create a DIY post-it blog calendar.  Now it's time to plan! Here are over 30 ideas/questions to get you inspired to plan your holiday blog content...

1. brainstorm a list of blog post topics and ideas. list whatever comes to mind, you can always edit later. keep a running list of ideas, the additional topics can be used for next month.
2. brainstorm a list of holiday related ideas, themes, colors. these words might spark ideas for blog content.
3. if you have a regular blog series, think of ways you can incorporate the holidays. {ie. if you do a fashion blog post series...how about holiday colored clothing or an ugly holiday sweater theme}
4. create a blog series.  In 2009, I created my blog series, 24{holiday} inspirations, my goal was to post 24 days of creative inspiration posts during the month of December, that revolved around topics to celebrate the holidays. This series includes DIY tutorials, color palettes, art journaling prompts, artist profiles and daily life posts all related to the holidays. I have continued the blog series for the past three years and the content has been some of my most popular posts.
5. think about creative ways to show your audience the behind the scene snapshots of your studio...how you create your products or artwork.
6. give a sneak peek of upcoming product releases
7. what types of tutorials can you share with your audience? don't copy what's been done already, share new ideas. If you have an idea, do a quick google search to see if it's been done before. if it has, how can you make yours unique and different?
8. what are your favorite things to do during the holidays? how can you translate them into stories for your blog?
9. look at your photographs, what stories do they tell? photographs can always inspire great ideas for blog posts
10. do you have favorite holiday memories or yummy recipes? tell the stories, share photos of the holiday table or dishes.
11. ask your audience...take a poll to find out what your audience wants to read more about on your blog.
12. collaborate with other artists..find ways to work with your favorite bloggers/artist friends. maybe a fun technique blog post, a themed post with photos.
13. share your favorite holiday decorations.
14. how can you translate holiday trends/themes into a blog post? Etsy has great merchandising resources that you can use to inspire your blog content.
15. look at patterns, prints and color palettes. create a holiday post about colors.
16. create a Pinterest board or flickr photo gallery of holiday inspirations
17. share the LOVE..help promote your friends or other artist you admire
18. create an holiday ETSY treasury
19. holidays around town--->take your blog readers on a holiday tour around your hometown
20. holiday window displays. I love peek inside my favorite retail establishments especially Anthropologie.
21. visiting or vending at a holiday craft fair...share you experience in words + photos
22. what holiday traditions do you celebrate? signing holiday carols, lighting the christmas tree, family vacation, etc.
23. where do you find your inspirations? books? shopping? on a nature walk?
24. share the season in photos
25. vintage christmas or vintage halloween decor..places to shop..what to look for...colors and themes.
26. interesting holiday paper projects or wrapping paper and gift wrapping ideas
27. what are you thankful for? write a post about it, create an art journal page and share it in photos.
28. create lists...top 10 holiday deserts, 20 places to find interesting gifts, my santa list
29. share your kids or grand kids art making holiday projects
30. write about your favorite holiday book or movie
31. share ideas for setting the holiday table and fun party planning ideas
