hello creative friends! It's been a busy summer here in my studio. I designed a new collection of art journals, taught a weekend Printmaking Unleashed workshop at my studio, and I've been working hard on a BIG project...designing my BRAND NEW education website!

here's a peek inside my colorful, messy and bright studio PLUS some of the projects I've been working on...

As you might know I moved into a new studio space earlier this year and I've turned the walls into inspiration boards full of my photos, covered with collections of images, color swatches and paintings that I'm working on. 

Everyday I spend time writing out my ideas and collage the walls with my mind maps, lists and brainstorming notes.

On one of the one of the walls I've taped notes for my upcoming product launches and website plans...super excited to share them with you! As much as I love pushing paint on the canvas, I LOVE the creative business visioning part of being an artist. Throughout the years, I've developed a number of strategies for my ideation process and will be teaching these in an upcoming creative business online workshop and e-book.

I reserve most Fridays for studio days, where I spend the day painting...I LOVE to paint on multiple yards of drill cloth and I use the walls as my easel. It's perfect for working LARGE! 

{TIP: hang two large canvas drop cloths with plastic lining on the wall. I let about 4 feet of one of the canvases drape onto the floor. This catches all the extra paint and water that drips of the canvas. Then hang the fabric on top over the drop cloth. You can find these at your local hardware store in the painting section.}

There's also been lots of experimenting with new techniques and shipping out orders...

Parlez-vous français? Exciting news...I received a copy of the French language version of my book Doodles Unleashed!! Le Gribouillage Creatif is now available! There is also a German version called Doodel-Design...happy doodling!

Last but not least...my sweet little studio companion sleeps while I design the new website.

my hope is for you to enjoy a few minutes a day incorporating art into your busy holiday schedule. The ideas I share are jumpstarts...things..tips...words...prompts to get your mind sparking with ideas. Have fun using them in any way you'd like.  Today, let's start with a simple creative exercise to generate ideas.

what memories do you have of Christmas? December? Hanukkah?

what are your holiday family traditions?

what images remind you of "the most wonderful time of the year"?

write words, write phrases, write song lyrics, write quotes.

keep this list handy as you may refer back to it when playing in your art journal or sketch book.

SKETCH and DOODLE----> spend 10-30 minutes making lists and doodling. create a quick sketch and write your HOLIDAY words. PLAY with your FAVE markers & pens...use a paintbrush, a highliter, white correction pen, colored pencils, type them into your phone/computer or scribble them on paper.

my ART JOURNAL is a space to play, to experiment, explore and be messy. you can read about my process here. I work randomly inside, sometimes on separate pages then staple or tape them in and lately I've been playing a lot with my new iPad mini {which I LOVE} and a Wacom Bamboo stylus to doodle, sketch and storyboard ideas. I'll be sharing more iPad art journaling soon.

Over the past few months, I have received numerous emails asking for more details about my online workshops...including which would be best for beginners, what I would recommend for those starting a creative business, etc. I've decided to share more about each of the self-guided online workshops I offer through a series of blog posts.

I've traveled the world teaching mixed media for over 10 years and have been producing/creating online workshop for three years. I have a catalog of 16 e-courses with over 170 HD videos on a variety of mixed media topics from painting, doodling, surface design and creative business. Each e-course/online workshop has colorful PDF downloadable workbooks many which have over 100 pages of inspiration. I'm working on putting a few final touches on my new digital boutique and will share more videos and info when the new website launches in a couple weeks.

Here's the first in-depth preview for my new REDEFINE the Doodle online workshop series which began with workshop #1: inspirations + mark-making last week. During this workshop, Monday through Friday, I post a new mixed media lesson with videos and/or pdf workbooks. We also have live streaming video chats where I answer questions and share techniques.

Here's a peek at the first week of techniques...so far there are EIGHT video lessons and 20 pages of creative inspiration. This workshop runs LIVE from April 30 - May 25 and is available to access and work at your own pace until December 31, 2012. You can register at anytime and once the lesson is LIVE you can view the videos as much as you like and the PDF workbooks are downloadable. I'm teaching mixed media workshops at great american scrapbook convention

A few weeks ago I received an email and the subject read "Mixed Media and Scrapbooking - a great partnership". Interesting, I thought... so I opened the email and it was an invitation to teach at the 2012 Great American Scrapbook Conventions in Texas and Virginia, where they are introducing a new Mixed Media series of workshops. I know I said I was cutting back on teaching this year, but it sounds like a event plus I'm looking forward to seeing family while I'm traveling.

Mixed media in scrapbooking has definitely become a trend over the past couple of years. I actually started teaching mixed media workshops at scrapbook stores around 10 years ago. Now manufacturers and scrapbook companies have slowly adopted the techniques mixed media artists have been doing for years. I think it's wonderful to see people painting and drawing on their pages, making handmade books and exploring art journaling.

After a little brainstorming, I created two new mixed media workshops that will be taught at GASC in Texas and Virginia. If you are in the area come on down and take my workshops! These are my only LIVE in-person events in the midwest and East Coast for 2012. I'll also be doing a book signing at the conventions. here are the workshops I'm teaching...

mixed media techniques for scrapbooking

Taking inspiration from Traci's new book, Doodles Unleashed, you will be guided through a colorful and inspiration creative journey to explore painting, doodling and collage. Experiment with creative ways to play with photos and add paint to your scrapbook pages. You will create numerous mixed media pages that can be used to create art journaling cards for Project Life or for collage in your scrapbooks. You'll work with handmade tools, stencils and spray mists to create unique backgrounds.

Explore painting and mixed media techniques on canvas to make a beautiful one-of-a-kind art journal. You will begin by creating a large graffiti canvas that will be converted to create a mini book/art journal. Learn interesting ways to combine photographs with art and simple collage ideas. Learn fun ways to design your own "washi" style tape. Experiment with techniques including painting and drawing on canvas. Work with various found tools for creative mark-making and play with creative prompts to develop your personal graffiti and lettering. Have fun playing with simple book binding techniques.
